Part I: In Which I Risk Bodily Harm For Barack Obama
As promised, I volunteered with the Obama campaign here in Colorado last weekend. Much thanks to Rose and TJ for sponsoring me! I participated in a “sporadic voter” canvass in one of the most Democratic neighborhoods in Denver. Basically, we were trying to get in touch with people who the campaign hadn't yet contacted—-mostly people who hadn't voted in the previous election.
Some thoughts I'd like to share:
Even though at first I was nervous about canvassing, it really was pretty easy. Most people were polite--even the one McCain supporter I encountered. I visited close to 50 homes and only ran into one person who didn't want to talk.
- Walking through a working class neighborhood, you really get a sense of the state of the economy. I saw quite a few foreclosed homes, probably 1 or 2 per block. Everyone I spoke to said the economy was their main issue. Perhaps not surprisingly, almost all of the political lawn signs were for Democrats.
- I did in fact risk bodily harm for Obama. Believe those beware of dog signs! I was almost bit by a German Shepard as I was going to knock on a door. That would have sucked. He probably should have been tied up (the yard had only a decorative fence) but I should've bailed quicker. That shouldn't stop you from volunteering—just remember to be careful!
I have cleared my schedule to be able to volunteer next weekend. For every $20 in donation for Obama, I promise to volunteer one hour for the Obama campaign here in Colorado. It's a great two-for-one: you get to support a great candidate AND you get to participate by mobilizing a volunteer in a swing state!
Will you take a moment to check out my page and consider making a donation?
