Even the Parking Lot Must Compliment the Fung Shui

Erin and I went to see Gnarls Barkley headline the SoCo Music Festival on Saturday night. Though the concert venue was billed as Coors Field, it was, in fact, the much less glamorous Coors Field parking lot. And while admission to the festival was free, beers were $6. I refuse to pay $6 for Coors in a plastic cup. It's just not going to happen.

Fortunately, the show did not disappoint. The seven (yes, seven) piece lineup blazed through neo-soul rave-ups like "Run (I'm a Natural Disaster)" and "Gone Daddy Gone." Strangely, "Crazy," their biggest hit, fell a little flat live--the weird spaciness of the album version didn't translate as well live--but the audience loved it anyway. The set closed with a roaring take on "Smiley Faces" before Cee-Lo sent us off into the night in his own inimitable way.

I was a little sad that DJ DangerMouse and Cee-Lo didn't wear their trademark duo costumes (Darth Vader & storm trooper, Napoleon Dynamite & Pedro, etc.). They've certainly got the natural shapes to pull off a bottle of SoCo and a lime.
